3 Reasons Why You Need to Get Hip to Cheese Tea
It's not often that you see this odd combination, or at least that's what we think. Tea purveyors in Taiwan were known to invent this frothy concoction seven years ago, making it quite the popular fad for social media lovers, tastemakers and beyond. Now this isn't like your typical cup of boba tea, this is literally a creamy layer of cheese on top. And though the mix of mousse-like cheese with tea does not sound quite a delight, well, it actually is.
Imagine standing with hundreds of people wrapped around the block, waiting two to three hours for cheese tea. According to Conde Nast Traveler, these lines really do exist. Chinese tea chain HEYTEA reportedly sells about 2,000 to 3,000 cups of cheese tea a day at each of its branches. By removing powdered cheese and swapping it with New Zealand cheese and cream, HEYTEA enhanced the whipped layer, changing the tea game forever.
“It’s not just cheese and tea,” says Jenny Zheng, founder of Little Fluffy Head, in her video. “You have the tea base at the bottom and then you top it off with cheese cream.”
Here are three reasons why you need to drink this 🧀🧀🧀:
This is not Parmesan or Provolone.
Don't be freaked out that your tea will taste like pizza, guys. Think of it as an amplified milk espresso, or as owner of Little Fluffy Head would say: "Actually it's the melted cream cheese with the whipping cream, milk and a little bit of salt to give it the sweet and savory taste. So, the taste of the cheese is actually really subtle."
You can customize the cheese in your tea.
At HEYTEA, for example, the cheese foam can be customized, too: Customers can mix in fruits like grapefruit or go for a lighter, low-sugar option. While Little Fluffy Head has cream whipped fresh every morning in small batches and different flavors which include: cream cheese, white cheddar cheese, crème brulee, and pumpkin spice flavor (seasonal).
Say Cheese! It's totally an Instagrammable moment.
